After concept, and current (“before”)

The changing needs of client warranted a complete reconfiguration of their existing 1950 concrete house, as well as a large extension. They wanted the extension to be contemporary but to harmonize with the modern spirit of the original house. The extension, capped on either side by generous glazing, follows the existing void of the house created by its split level. The living areas of the ground floor are distributed around a central core becoming the new focal point of the house. The new master bedroom was placed on the second floor, secluded from the children’s bedrooms  accessed by a glass catwalk spanning the entrance of the home.

Type: Single family home

Intervention: Interior re-organisation and extension

Introducing the Berri Residence

A couple with a passion for contemporary architecture and two young children wanted an extension to their 1940s duplex. Their main desire was to create a dining room that would become the heart of the house, where family discussions take place.

At the center of the new extension is the dining room just off the re-modeled kitchen on the ground floor. It has generous south-facing glazing and and a large dining table in the center. The master bedroom is located below the dining room overlooking the sunken garden. Despite the use of wood cladding, the extension has a sense of lightness and transparency due to the dimensions of the glass panels being pushed to their limits. The exterior finish is an olive green stained pine with an overhanging glazed volume clad in galvanized steel.
